How to enroll as a non-degree seeking student

Applying to CSU Online

Learn how to apply to Colorado State as a Freshmen, Transfer, or Graduate student.

Did you know you can take online courses at CSU without being admitted to CSU? We call these students “non-degree seeking” students. Other terms might be: "visiting students," "guest students," or "single course takers."

Important Information

  • Non-degree seeking students are not eligible to use grants and loans from federal financial aid. Many scholarships also will not disperse funds for non-degree seeking coursework. As such, the majority of non-degree seeking students pay course tuition and fees out-of-pocket.

  • Certain online courses may have restricted registrations for students admitted to specific degree programs.

  • Do you have questions about taking online courses as a non-degree seeking student? Reach out to the CSU Online Advising Team at csu_online_studentsupport@colostate.edu.

Steps to enroll in a course

  • Create an account on the CSU Online website.
  • Review course pages (including drop and withdrawal deadlines on each course page).
  • If a course is open for registration, there will be an orange button on the course page indicating “add to my courses.”
  • Once you have added the courses you want to take for a semester, click the shopping cart icon in the top right corner of the screen.
  • Review the tuition information provided and if you want to register for the courses, click the “Begin registration” button.
  • Follow the steps to complete your registration. If you are registering for courses with pre-requisites, you will have to confirm you meet the pre-requisite during one of the registration steps.
  • You will receive a confirmation email within 24 hours of submitting all registration steps. Please check your junk email folder if you do not see the confirmation email in your inbox.
  • You must read the confirmation email to receive your CSU student ID number, set up DUO, and the instructions on how to activate your NetID.
  • You must set up DUO and activate your NetID to access the courses in Canvas.
  • Courses do not show in Canvas until the first day when the course begins.
  • Review tuition billing information.

Removing yourself from coursework

If you do not want to complete the coursework, it is your responsibility to remove the course by the course drop and withdrawal deadlines. You will be charged for the tuition/fees of the coursework you register for unless:

  • You drop the coursework by the course drop deadline
  • You withdraw from the coursework by the course 50% withdrawal deadline (you will owe 50% of the tuition/fees)

Students drop and withdraw from coursework via RAMweb.
